Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. What do you know about the American Civil War? In Civil War History, you will learn why the states in the North and South fought each other so fiercely. You will discover some interesting facts, and some very sad facts, about the war and its participants. The entire conflict revolved around the concept of slavery and whether or not the country should be able to practice it.

There were 11 states in the southern region of the country that wanted to continue enslaving Africans to work their tobacco and cotton fields. The states wanted to secede from the union and govern themselves in order to continue practicing slavery. When the government refused, the South attacked the North in the Battle of Fort Sumter and began the war.

You will learn who some of the leaders involved in the conflict were, including Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. President Abraham Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation some time before the end of the war, but it was not immediately followed by the South. Near the end of the same year, President Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address in November of 1863, and it is considered one of the most powerful oratories given by any U.S. president. On April 9, 1865, Grant defeated Lee and finally ended the war. Only six days later, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.

Now, what do you understand when we say inverse?
Inverse means opposite
Eg. High - low
Hot - cold etc.
Let’s see how we use this in Mathematics. The opposite of addition is subtraction and opposite of subtraction is addition. On that note, let’s see a simple example
5 + 2 =7
It means, by adding 5 and 2 we get the answer 7. Now we will use the inverse operation of the same equation by subtracting 2 from the answer…
i.e. 7 - 2 = 5
We can also write,
7 - 5 = 2
Let's see another example:
2 + 3 = 5
Now, we can rewrite it as
5 - 3 = 2
This is Inverse operation


Similarly, Opposite of multiplication is division and opposite of division is multiplication…
E.g. 2 x 3 = 6
Now think ‘Inverse’ again, what do you divide to make it 2? It’s simple, we need to replace the multiply sign with its opposite sign, which is a division sign, along with the output value 6, which will look like this:
6 ÷ 3 = 2
One more benefit of inverse operation is that you can use addition to check subtraction and vice versa.
For instance,
If 4 + 2 = 6
then
6 - 2 = 4
or
6 - 4 = 2

So, in this way, we got all the numbers that we used in the equation like 6, 4 and 2.. Thus we can be sure about the correct answer that is 6, in this case. Similarly we can cross check the problems of Multiplication and Division with the help of Inverse Operations.

Students collect data and apply mathematical modeling, specifically linear approximation, to predict what will happen in a specific situation. In this activity, students collect data to determine the number of Jelly Belly jelly beans it takes to fill up the respective tube. Students plot their data, graph a linear approximation model, and write an equation representing their model. Students use their linear model to predict the number of Jelly Belly jelly beans that are in a similar cylindrical tube with a given height. Students discuss the accuracy of their results and limitations in their model and data collection process. They then apply their predictions to make suggestions to Jelly Belly for potential packaging of jelly beans based on quantity instead of net weight.
