If you ask a linguist โ€œHow many languages are there in the world?โ€ the answer most will give you is โ€œaround 7000โ€. We say โ€œaroundโ€ because there are several factors that make it difficult to determine what exactly counts as a language, including the difficulty of distinguishing between languages and dialects, various political factors, and the fact that not all languages have the same degree of resources and records. In this episode of Crash Course Linguistics, weโ€™ll explore these 3 factors to learn about world languages and linguistic diversity, as well as the inequities that these factors can create.

If you prefer to read, rather than watch this video, hereโ€™s the transcript:

Title: Equivalent Fractions: Reducing Fractions to Simplest Terms

Youโ€™ve already learned how to reduce fractions by rewriting them with a smaller denominator, and youโ€™ve learned how to find the greatest common factor of two numbers.
In this lesson, youโ€™ll put both of these together to rewrite fractions with the smallest possible numbers. This is referred to as โ€œreducing the fraction to simplest terms.โ€ Before we begin, letsโ€™ look at some new words we use when describing fractions.
The first one is term. Term is another way of saying โ€œnumberโ€. Five is a term.
Three-fourths is a term.
And two and five-eighths is a term.
When we write a proper or improper fraction, the numerator is a term and the denominator is a term.
When dealing with fractions we also refer to simplest terms or lowest terms. These both mean the same thing. When a fraction is written in simplest terms, or lowest terms, it means the fraction is written with the smallest possible numbers for the numerator and denominator. A fraction is written in simplest terms when the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator is one.
Hereโ€™s an example. Five-twelfths is written in simplest terms. The greatest common factor of 5 and 12 is one. This means neither the numerator nor the denominator can be written with a smaller number.
Another example. Seven-thirds is written in simplest terms. The greatest common factor of the terms is one, so seven and three are the smallest numbers that can be used to write the fraction.
Nine-fourteenths is written in simplest terms. The greatest common factor of the terms is one.
Six-eighths is not written in simplest terms. One is not the greatest common factor of the terms.
This means we can write this fraction with smaller numbers without changing its value. To find the new numerator and denominator, we need the greatest common factor of six and eight. Two is the greatest common factor. We can use two to rewrite the fraction and reduce it to its simplest terms.
We reduce the terms by dividing each term by the greatest common factor, which is 2. When we divide six by two we get three.
And when we divide eight by two we get four.
Three-fourths is the same fraction as six-eighths, but itโ€™s now written in simplest terms.
When we reduce the terms of a fraction using the greatest common factor, we refer to this as โ€œreducing the fraction to simplest termsโ€. The value of the fraction remains the same, but the numbers used to write it are smaller.
In the remainder of this lesson, youโ€™ll be asked to determine if a fraction is written in simplest terms. If the fraction is not written in simplest terms, you will be asked to reduce the fraction.

Today I will show my favorite multiplication trick to multiply two digit numbers so fast in only three steps.
โœ”๏ธ More tricks: https://www.youtube.com/playli....st?list=PLszXz1y8Gha

There are the 3 steps:
- First, multiply the digits in the ones place column.
- Second, cross multiply the numbers in the middle (criss cross). Donยดt forget to add the products together.
- Third, multiply the digits in the tens place column.

Be patient, with some practice, you will be able to multiply two digit numbers mentally, trust me.

That is all for today; what other tricks do you want to see on the channel? Maybe another multiplication trick? See you in my next #shorts .

English teachers often struggle with how to teach a grammar point. In this three-part video series, Chris Westergaard from The Language House TEFL in Prague breaks down all of the techniques and correct methods to teach English grammar productively.

Watch video #2 https://youtu.be/P-Lqj0ipGMU

This first video deals with the misconceptions that many English teachers have when they teach English grammar and some great tips on how to prepare for a grammar lesson.
Teaching grammar is all about usage and less about learning all of the rules of a grammar point. Yes, the rules are important, but the end goal of any grammar lesson should be aimed at students being able to use the grammar point in real-life discussions, roleplays, and authentic conversations.
Here are the specific tips covered in the video
.
1. Know your grammar point
2. Pull out 1-2 functions
3. Plan your activation
4. Decide on rules/content
5. Think of the language level of your students
6. Investigate materials
7. Have an overreaching topic (your topic is not your grammar point)
.
After watching this first video, check out video #2 on how to present grammar effectively.
https://youtu.be/P-Lqj0ipGMU

If you are interested in teaching English abroad, take a look at The Language House TEFL in Prague. We train new teachers every month who graduate and go on to successfully teach English abroad all over the world.

What are Roman numerals? How do you read them? In this video, you and your kids will learn all about Roman numerals. We will talk about how the Romans developed this numbering system 3,000 years ago for addition and subtraction and for counting without using zeros.

Your students will learn which letters are part of the Roman numeral systemโ€”I, V, X, L, C, D, Mโ€”and what the value is for each letter. Then they will learn a few rules that will help them figure out how to represent numbers in Roman numerals. The video covers three rules. First, you will never use more than three of the same numeral in a row. Second, a smaller numeral before a larger numeral means you subtract its value from the larger numeral. Third, if you write a smaller numeral after a larger numeral, then you add its value to the larger numeral.

After a few examples for each of these rules, the video provides a short review of what you learned. If you can answer the questions correctly, then you have mastered using Roman numerals!

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning how to count with Roman numerals! If you want even more practice, head over to our website and download our free lesson plan about Roman numerals, which is full of activities, worksheets, and more!

What is the difference between a rule and a law? What would life be like if neither rules nor laws existed? In Laws and Rules for Kids, you will discover the answer to these and other questions you have about these concepts. They have similarities, such as the fact that both exist to keep people safe. But they are also different in a few ways. For instance, if you break a law, it may have more serious consequences than breaking a rule does.

A law is created by the government, and the public enforces these laws. A rule relates to behaviors that we should follow in certain situations or places. Breaking a law and breaking a rule both lead to consequences. If you litter, which is breaking the law, you might have to pay a fine. If you throw a ball inside your house even though there is a rule not to, you might break something and get in trouble.

In general, rules are used by smaller groups, like families, schools, teams, and business. Laws are used in much larger groups, like cities, states, and countries. Individuals create rules for different places and situations, such as parents in a family or teachers in a classroom. On the other hand, laws must be voted on by people in government offices or by the citizens.

Again, the consequences or punishments for breaking rules are not as severe as those for breaking laws. If you break rules at school, you might have to skip recess or miss out on certain activities or privileges. If you break a law, you could pay a fine, go to court, do community service, or even serve jail time! Watch the video to see if you can tell the difference between a rule and a law.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about the difference between a rule and a law! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!
