This phonics lesson from Kids Academy will teach your child all about the letter F. The letter F and its sound makes up many fun words. Once students learn the letter F and its sound they can begin forming all types of words like FUN, FAN and FLIP. This video will cover both the capital and lowercase F’s as well as use F as an example in many words.
F is the sixth letter in the english alphabet and the letter name is pronounced ef. The letter F sound can be made by raising the upper lip and gently touching the teeth to the lower lip, then blowing air through the teeth. The sound is made as the air passes between the lower lip and the teeth. The letter F is commonly followed by a vowel (A,E,I,O,U) when it starts a word. This leads to a rolling of the lower lip into the vowel sound. Try slowly practicing the words FUN, FAR or FAST with your student in a mirror. Watching their own mouth move will help students with pronunciation of this letter.
The letter F starts many words like FLAG, FALL and FURRY, but it can also be found in many words as well. Words like IF, SHELF, and CAFE all have the letter F making its traditional sound.
F is also what is known as a bonus letter. When the letter F ends a word following a vowel it is doubled to keep the /f/ sound. For example the word STUFF uses two F’s to keep the sound. The word OFF also uses two F’s. WIthout both F’s the word would be OF which changes the sound and the meaning completely. This is a more advanced part of the letter F and dropping the bonus letter is a common mistake for young writers.
Another common pitfall for young writers is confusing the digraph PH with the letter F. Since they both make the same sound it can be difficult for students to decide when to use each. The word PHONE uses the PH letters to make the /f/ sound. However, the word FUN uses the letter F to make the very same sound. It is best to keep these lessons separated and try not to use any PH words until they have fully grasped the sound and letter formation of the letter F.

Kids are introduced to the concept of place value in the second grade. Place Value is a core concept in math. But it’s difficult to teach a kid that the value of a digit (0-9) is dependent upon its position in a number. In place value, you have to teach the kid the position that a number holds and the value that number has.
You have to keep in mind that every kid will learn at his/her own pace so you have to be patient and understanding. The right time to teach place value is after the kids have learned to count and can perform simple additions and subtractions.

Hands-on methods and practical games are the most effective ways of teaching place value to a kid. One such method is by using poker chips.
Here are the steps for teaching place value using poker chips.

1. Introduce Group Counting
Teach students how to skip count in twos, threes, fours, fives, and tens. Especially emphasize the ‘sense of ten’. This concept is fundamental for the understanding of place value.

2. Teach the difference between numbers and digits
The basic ten number symbols (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) are known as digits. These digits are combined together to make all other numbers in mathematics. Draw examples to demonstrate that ‘3’ and ‘5’are digits on their own but when combined, they make the number thirty-five.

3. Use a Number Board
Draw or print out a number board that contains numbers in sequential order from 1- 100. Explain to the kids using visual examples how the numbers from 0-9 interact with the numbers from 10 - 100. Teach the kids that every number from 10 – 99 is made up of two numbers. One number is in the ‘ones’ place and the second number is in the ‘tens’ place.

4. Use an Interactive Example
Now take out the poker chips and distribute them among the kids. Tell them that white poker chips stand for the ‘ones’ place whereas the blue poker chips stand for the ‘tens’ place. Now show the kids how to create numbers using place value with the help of poker chips.
It is not necessary to use poker chips or pebbles specifically. But it is your responsibility to make learning fun for the kids so you can use any small colored objects to demonstrate the examples.

Doctor Checkup for Kids - Types of Doctors - Social Studies | Kids Academy

Learning about doctors for kids is not only an educational social studies activity, but it is also a way that parents can teach children about who a doctor is and what a doctor does. Instruction and preparation go a long way in calming any fears that young children may have about going to get a child check-up.

Children are less afraid of a medical situation if they learn about what happens at a doctor’s visit and the importance of doctors.
The video begins with a colorful introduction that shows the hospital scene.

The viewer hears the voiceover say, “Let’s go visit the doctor.” Children then see what a doctor’s office looks like and what happens in the office during a child checkup. First, the doctor will ask you how you feel and the checkup begins. The video mentions that the doctor checks not only if you are feeling well, or if you are sick but also if you are growing well.

Children learn what a stethoscope is and how it checks your heart and lungs. Also, children learn that a nurse often helps the doctor during the check-up and asks questions that the doctor needs to know. The video explains to children that there are many different kinds of doctors and details about what an optometrist does. Billy, a young boy in the video gets some cool green glasses and describes his experience positively.

The video also carefully explains the difference between a doctor and a veterinarian.
This video is a valuable teaching tool for parents teaching their children about doctors and for teachers teaching social studies to young students. This material would work well as an introduction activity, enrichment activity and as a fun supplemental activity for teachers in the classroom and homeschooling families as well.
