Title: Learn to subtract 1-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers Pt. 2.

You already know how to subtract when you have to take a ten.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to use that to subtract with numbers that have both tens and ones.
Here's an example. 43 minus 7.
We start with the ones place.
We can't subtract 7 from 3, so we have to take a ten from 40 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 4 in 40 and we enter a 3 here to show we have 3 tens left.
Now we put a 1 here to show that we have 13 ones.
So now we have 13 minus 7.
13 minus 7 is 6, so we put a 6 in the ones place of the answer.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 3 for the 3 tens we have left.
That gives us 36.
So 43 minus 7 is 36.
Another example. 65 minus 8.
We start with the ones place.
We can't subtract 8 from 5, so we have to take a ten from 60 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 6 in 60 and we enter a 5 here to show that we have 5 tens left.
And we enter a 1 here to show we have 15 ones.
Now we subtract 8 from 15.
15 minus 8 is 7.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 5 for the 5 tens we have left.
That gives us 57.
So 65 minus 8 is 57.
Last example. 37 minus 8.
We can't subtract 8 from 7, so we have to take a ten from 30 to make 10 ones.
We cross out the 3 in 30 and we enter a 2 here to show that we have 2 tens left.
And we enter a 1 here to show we have 17 ones.
Now we subtract 8 from 17.
17 minus 8 is 9.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 2 for the 2 tens we have left.
That gives us 29.
So 37 minus 8 is 29.
In the rest of this lesson, you'll work problems like these. You can use these boxes if you want, but you don’t have to.
