Solving an equation with variables on both side and one solution
Solving an equation with variables on both side and one solution Teacherflix 16 Views • 2 years ago

👉 Learn how to solve multi-step equations with variable on both sides of the equation. An equation is a statement stating that two values are equal. A multi-step equation is an equation which can be solved by applying multiple steps of operations to get to the solution.

To solve a multi-step equation, we first combine like terms by taking the variable terms to one side of the equality sign and the constant terms to the other side of the equation and evaluate them, then we can isolate the variable by multiplying both sides by the reciprocal of the coefficient of the variable.

If you prefer to read, rather than watch this video, here’s the transcript:

Title: Equivalent Fractions: Reducing Fractions to Simplest Terms

You’ve already learned how to reduce fractions by rewriting them with a smaller denominator, and you’ve learned how to find the greatest common factor of two numbers.
In this lesson, you’ll put both of these together to rewrite fractions with the smallest possible numbers. This is referred to as “reducing the fraction to simplest terms.” Before we begin, lets’ look at some new words we use when describing fractions.
The first one is term. Term is another way of saying “number”. Five is a term.
Three-fourths is a term.
And two and five-eighths is a term.
When we write a proper or improper fraction, the numerator is a term and the denominator is a term.
When dealing with fractions we also refer to simplest terms or lowest terms. These both mean the same thing. When a fraction is written in simplest terms, or lowest terms, it means the fraction is written with the smallest possible numbers for the numerator and denominator. A fraction is written in simplest terms when the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator is one.
Here’s an example. Five-twelfths is written in simplest terms. The greatest common factor of 5 and 12 is one. This means neither the numerator nor the denominator can be written with a smaller number.
Another example. Seven-thirds is written in simplest terms. The greatest common factor of the terms is one, so seven and three are the smallest numbers that can be used to write the fraction.
Nine-fourteenths is written in simplest terms. The greatest common factor of the terms is one.
Six-eighths is not written in simplest terms. One is not the greatest common factor of the terms.
This means we can write this fraction with smaller numbers without changing its value. To find the new numerator and denominator, we need the greatest common factor of six and eight. Two is the greatest common factor. We can use two to rewrite the fraction and reduce it to its simplest terms.
We reduce the terms by dividing each term by the greatest common factor, which is 2. When we divide six by two we get three.
And when we divide eight by two we get four.
Three-fourths is the same fraction as six-eighths, but it’s now written in simplest terms.
When we reduce the terms of a fraction using the greatest common factor, we refer to this as “reducing the fraction to simplest terms”. The value of the fraction remains the same, but the numbers used to write it are smaller.
In the remainder of this lesson, you’ll be asked to determine if a fraction is written in simplest terms. If the fraction is not written in simplest terms, you will be asked to reduce the fraction.

Woolly Mammoths for Kids | Learn all about this furry animal and its existence during the Ice Ages
Woolly Mammoths for Kids | Learn all about this furry animal and its existence during the Ice Ages Teacherflix 16 Views • 2 years ago

Have you ever heard of a woolly mammoth? If you have, you probably know that it looks pretty similar to the modern-day elephant. Woolly mammoths existed about 30,000 years ago during one of the earth's ice ages. In Woolly Mammoths for Kids, you will learn some fun facts about these amazing creatures.

First of all, why did they have so much fur anyway? Well, because they lived during an ice age, that means their environment was covered in ice and glaciers. In order to survive, they would have to have lots of fur to keep them warm. In fact, they had two layers of fur to protect them from temperatures as low as -58°F! That is really cold!

As you now know, woolly mammoths were ancestors to the modern elephant. They grew as tall as 13 feet, which is about the size of African elephants. Unlike elephants today, woolly mammoths had tusks that grew as large as 15 feet that they used for digging in the snow and ice. Their ears were smaller as well, and they had a hump on their back that many scientists believe stored fat that the mammoth could use when food was hard to find.

Scientists know so many things about these furry animals because of the remains they have studied. However, they aren't sure why exactly they became extinct. Most scientists thing it was due to overhunting by humans or rising temperatures that destroyed their habitats. Some believe it might have been a combination of these things. While most woolly mammoths became extinct around 10,000 years ago, the last group survived until around 1650 B.C.!

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about this cool ancestor of the modern elephant! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about this topic, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Abbreviations for Kids | Learn some common abbreviations and why we shorten words
Abbreviations for Kids | Learn some common abbreviations and why we shorten words Teacherflix 16 Views • 2 years ago

Do you know what an abbreviation is or how to make one? An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. You can make one by taking letters out and replacing them with other letters or symbols, such as a period. In this video, you and your kids will learn about some common abbreviations, many of which you probably use every day.

One of the most common abbreviations has to do with the time of day. We use a.m. in the morning hours and p.m. in the evening and night hours. What do those actually stand for? "Ante meridiem" is Latin for before noon, so we use a.m. for all the times before noon. "Post meridiem" is Latin for after noon, so we use p.m. for all the times after noon.

Other common abbreviations involve days of the week, months of the year, measurement, and time. For example, we can write Sat. for Saturday or Dec. for December rather than writing out the whole word. In recipe books, you will often find abbreviations for their measurements, like tsp for teaspoon or oz for ounce. And you've probably seen abbreviations like min for minutes or yr for year.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about abbreviations! If you want even more practice, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Earthquakes for Kids STEM | Learn why earthquakes happen and how to measure them
Earthquakes for Kids STEM | Learn why earthquakes happen and how to measure them Teacherflix 16 Views • 2 years ago

Did you know that several million earthquakes happen every year? Earthquakes for Kids STEM is a great video to learn a little more about earthquakes. Most earthquakes are so small in magnitude that we can't feel them. The United States Geological Survey only records about 20 each year in the US.

The reason earthquakes happen in the first place has to do with the tectonic plates below the surface of the earth. Tectonic plates move around constantly. Those movements cause tension, which in turn causes huge faults or cracks in the rocks. The faults sometimes get stuck, and when they get unstuck, they cause an earthquake! Tectonic plates move in three ways: subduction, lateral sliding, and spreading.

The closer you are to an earthquake's epicenter, the more strongly you will feel it. This is because an earthquake loses its intensity as it travels away from the epicenter. Scientists measure the intensity of an earthquake using a seismograph, which detects and measures the vibrations of the earthquake. The magnitude of the earthquake is the number we assign to record its size. A magnitude of 5.5 if considered moderate. Above 8.0 means it's a major earthquake. And earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or lower are usually not felt at all.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about earthquakes! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many lesson plans on earthquakes and other natural disasters, full of activities, worksheets, and more!
