What is an element? And how many known elements are there in the vast universe? Periodic Table of Elements for Kids answers these and other questions and explains how the table came to be in the first place. Elements make up everything in the whole world, so it makes sense to learn a little more about them. The Periodic Table provides us with a lot of valuable information about these different atoms.

The first person to propose that scientists arrange the elements in a table was Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. At the time, there were only 65 known elements, and Mendeleev arranged them according to their atomic weights as well as by their similar properties. Today, the table has seven rows, called periods, and 18 columns, called groups. The elements in each group have similar properties. For instance, the elements that can be classified as alkali metals all align in one group.

What you can learn about each element on the table depends on which table you look at. Some provide more information than others. For the most part, you can discover the element's name, atomic number, atomic weight, and symbol. Many symbols reflect the name of the element. For instance, the symbol for calcium is Ca. Others reflect the Latin origins of the word, such as for gold, the symbol for which is Au.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about the many elements on Earth! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about atoms or elements, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Who is George Washington? What did George Washington do? Did he cut down a cherry tree? In this video we learn all about George Washington for kids. George Washington was the very first president of the United States and has a profound impact on history not only in the United States but in the whole world! In this short but fun introduction video you and your students will learn all about him and the impact he had on the world.

George Washington was the first President of the United States. He was
born February 22, 1732 in Virginia. At age 16 he had a job as a surveyor, which means he measured the size
of new land turning the information into maps. He later became a landowner in Mount Vernon, Virginia and was
elected to the Virginia legislature.
Due to problems with the British wanting to control the colonies,
Washington led the Continental Army in a victory over the British during
a war called the American Revolution.
Several years later, after the war, Washington was elected as President
in 1789 until 1797. He helped create and guide the government based
on the words of the Constitution, and he took on many roles that are still
part of the presidency today.

Imagine having to hide in a secret hidden room to protect yourself and your family. That's what Anne Frank and her family had to do during World War II. In this video for kids, you will learn a lot about Anne Frank, an incredible individual who endured unimaginable suffering like so many other Jewish people during this time in history.

Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929 to Otto and Edith Frank. She also had a sister named Margot. Otto's family, who was Jewish, had lived in Germany for many generations. Because Adolph Hitler, who hated Jews, gained control of the German government, the Franks had to move to the Netherlands. For a few years, life was pretty normal, but the family was unable to escape to the United States or England before the war started in 1939 and before the war spread to the Netherlands.

Jewish people had to endure immense persecution over the next couple years. There was always a threat of being sent to concentration camps. The Frank family decided to go into hiding. Otto, his family, and some friends moved to a secret annex in 1942, when Anne was just 13 years old. They lived there for a couple years, and Anne started writing a diary about her experiences. She hoped one day to publish it as The Secret Annex and become a famous writer.

Unfortunately, Anne Frank and her family were discovered in August of 1944 and arrested. They were sent to concentration camps a month later. Anne and her sister died of typhus in March of 1945, just two months before the end of the war. Of all the individuals who lived in the secret annex, Otto was the only one to survive. Miep Gies, a woman who had hidden Anne's diary when the Franks were arrested, gave the diary to Otto, who published it under the title The Secret Annex. Anne's wish came true—she became a famous writer whose book has sold over 30 million copies and been translated into 70 languages.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about Anne Frank! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

What does it take to make a rainbow? Are there two points at which the rainbow touches the earth's surface? In this video for kids, you will learn all about the science behind how a rainbow forms. It takes three simple ingredients: light, water, and you!

Light is important because rainbows are actually made of light. The white light we see from the sun actually contains seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. When light enters a raindrop, it bends or refracts, and all the colors band together on the other side. That's what makes the light appear in a ribbon of color.

Rainbows appear in an arc shape. When the sun is low in the sky, the arc looks tall. When the sun is higher up, the arc of the rainbow is lower. But believe it or not, rainbows don't have an arc shape. It's an optical illusion! If you are in an airplane and you see a rainbow, it will be in a circular shape. All rainbows are circular.

Some rainbows appear at night, and we call these moonbows. Moonbows appear as a faint circle around the moon. They are usually not easy to see, and sometimes they even look white instead of colorful. There are also double rainbows and upside-down rainbows. Upside-down are very rare, and they actually only occur when light bends through the thin screen of tiny ice crystals high in the sky.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about this beautiful natural phenomenon! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many lesson plans about rainbows and light, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Q. Does Numberock drive real results in the classroom?
A. I knew I found the secret sauce when not only were my students retaining the concepts longer, they were singing the songs outside of the classroom during recess and at home with their parents during dinnertime. The songs were so catchy, my students couldn't get the math songs out of their head!

During testing, I often found my students humming the melodies in order to jostle their memory of a rule or problem solving process. As we've all experienced, there is something about the power of music that allows us to retain information easier and for longer periods of time. Without getting into the finer details of multi-sensory learning and how it often helps the students who most need the help, the power of a catchy song is hard to deny.

Research has shown that resources like these worksheets help students to integrate their artistic side with the mathematical side of their brain and as a result aides with long-term memory retention.

Our own research has shown us that teachers who try these activities love them! It seems to be a natural extension beyond song and video and into additional visual learning tools that when used in concert with our videos, cater to the many different types of learners that in your classroom - especially those non-mathy types.

In his talk "The Content-Free Classroom," James explains that social studies is the most important class students take in school - but not when the emphasis is on facts and dates. He believes in creating a classroom where teachers help students make connections between the present and the past to help them plan for their futures. A place where students cultivate their interests and discover their passions.

First implemented in 2009, Common Core was an ambitious initiative to revolutionize the American education system. National leaders from Bill Gates to President Obama supported the idea and it cost an estimated $15.8 billion to implement. Years later, research showed the new curriculum had minimal impact on student performance. So why did Common Core fail? Can a common curriculum be successful for all students? Watch the video to find out.

America is preparing for a return to school this fall semester, but curriculums might seem a bit different than they used to. Many states have implemented or are currently in the process of developing new educational standards to replace the Common Core.

“I think you are seeing today what kids experience and their curriculum kind of is a little bit more blended,” Connecticut Education Association President Kate Dias said.

On Feb. 12, 2020, Florida adopted the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking. New York is also developing its own curriculum. The Next Generation Learning Standards are expected to be implemented throughout New York by September 2022.

However, experts remain doubtful on whether the new standards truly stand by themselves.

“The standards that the states have come up with, where they claimed they were different from Common Core, they’re really not that much different,” said Tom Loveless, an educational researcher and former senior fellow at Brookings. “Some states just basically took the Common Core label off and then slapped the new label on the package.”

The end of Common Core might be arriving, but its impacts are here to stay. Watch the video above to learn more about why states are moving away from Common Core.

Economist Herb Stein famously said that something that can't go on forever, won't. For decades now, America has been putting ever-growing amounts of money into its K-12 education system, while getting steadily poorer results. Now parents are losing faith in public schools, new alternatives are appearing, and change is on the way.

This historical movie slideshow explains the foundation of American business competition. Visit http://www.ftc.gov/YouAreHere to learn more about the slideshow and to play games that demonstrate the effects of advertising and the benefits of competition.

The Federal Trade Commission deals with issues that touch the economic life of every American. It is the only federal agency with both consumer protection and competition jurisdiction in broad sectors of the economy. The FTC pursues vigorous and effective law enforcement; advances consumers' interests by sharing its expertise with federal and state legislatures and U.S. and international government agencies; develops policy and research tools through hearings, workshops, and conferences; and creates practical and plain-language educational programs for consumers and businesses in a global marketplace with constantly changing technologies.
