Otters are more than just cute, adorable little fuzzballs, they are one of the greatest conservation success stories of all time. Sea otters are a keystone species, meaning that an entire ecosystem depends on their presence. After they were nearly hunted to extinction for their dense fur, sea urchins (the otters' favorite food) nearly destroyed the Pacific kelp forests, a habitat that hundreds of species rely on for food and shelter.
Thanks to the hard work of conservation scientists at places like the Monterey Bay Aquarium, sea otter populations are on their way back. Here's the story of one orphaned sea otter pup's journey back to the wild

Linear Algebra on Khan Academy: Have you ever wondered what the difference is between speed and velocity? Ever try to visualize in four dimensions or six or seven? Linear algebra describes things in two dimensions, but many of the concepts can be extended into three, four or more. Linear algebra implies two dimensional reasoning, however, the concepts covered in linear algebra provide the basis for multi-dimensional representations of mathematical reasoning. Matrices, vectors, vector spaces, transformations, eigenvectors/values all help us to visualize and understand multi dimensional concepts. This is an advanced course normally taken by science or engineering majors after taking at least two semesters of calculus (although calculus really isn't a prereq) so don't confuse this with regular high school algebra.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

Maureen the rat takes us back through time to one of her ancestors, a rat living in London in 1666 at the time of The Great Fire of London.
In this episode we learn how the fire spread across the city and how the Lord Mayor, Samuel Pepys and King Charles II were involved alongside ordinary citizens.
This short film is from the series History KS1: The Great Fire of London.
It is designed to be a classroom resource suitable for teaching History at KS1 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 1st Level in Scotland.

New York City Chancellor Richard Carranza talks forcefully about making public schools more equitable for the black, Latino, and poor students who comprise the majority in the nationโs largest school district. His blunt language about how segregated the schools are in New York is not typical of superintendents. But in his first year on the job, Carranza has run into strong headwinds and political pushback as he pursues an equity agenda that includes overhauling admissions for the cityโs most elite high schools. In his upcoming keynote speech at Education Weekโs Leaders To Learn From event, Carranza will share what motivates him to keep pushing to change long, entrenched practices that he believes are keeping far too many students from accessing opportunities to learn. To learn more about Carranzaโs speech and Leaders To Learn From 2019, visit https://leaders.edweek.org/eve....nt-details/?intc=ltl

#rounding #placevalue #mathhelpvideos #homeschool
In this video, I will show you how to round decimals to the nearest hundredth. First, you need to identify the hundredth place value which is 2 to the right of the decimal. Next, look at the number next to the hundredth place on the right. If that number is 5 or greater, then you round up the hundredth place to the next digit. If it is 4 or less, you round down (which means keep it the same).

Improved math is a channel created to provide additional instruction on essential math concepts. Iโm passionate about math and I know first-hand how important math concepts are in the real world.
Teachers, parents, guardians, homeschoolers, and students can use these videos to help reinforce math skills. These math videos are designed to help teach yourself math or provide self-study math tools to assist when additional instruction is needed. Teaching math and learning math has changed the way many students learn in this virtual environment. Having on-demand math videos can provide math tutoring needed when children are not able to get help from their teachers after school hours or when trying to do math at home.
The library of math tutorials that I create can also be used as supplemental instructional material for homeschool math. Each full-length video comes with a subsequent knowledge check or math practice problems which serve as a virtual math topic worksheet to test your understanding of each skill. These videos can be paused to work out the problems on your own, then unpaused to check your answers. All of these videos can be found under the Knowledge Check playlist.
I also have a library of shorter videos (less than 1 minute in length - shorts) that are quick math tips and tricks on basic math topics. Some of these short math help videos include problems that you can work on yourself and submit your answers in the comments. They are all listed under my Math Tips and Tricks playlist.
Improved math is creating more videos every day to cover topics from 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and 7th-grade math. The videos focus on fractions, basic math operations, geometry, and ratios but more topics are being added all the time. If there is a specific topic you would like to see covered, drop me a comment in one of my videos and let me know!
Free math help videos will be posted every Thursday and Friday. For additional math resources, check out my math help website at improvedmath.com where I post math worksheets and answers along with additional context on math basics.

As you may have noticed, we like to blow stuff up on this channel. So when the International Red Cross approached us to collaborate on a video about nuclear weapons, we were more than excited.
Until we did the research. It turned out we were a bit oblivious off the real impact of nuclear weapons in the real world, on a real city. And especially, how helpless even the most developed nations on earth would be if an attack occurred today.
So hopefully this video demonstrates how extremely non fun a real world nuclear attack would be, without being too gruesome. This collaboration was a blast (no pun intended) and we want to say a huge thank you to the International Red Cross!

Difficult news is everywhere recentlyโclimate disasters, refugee crises, and wars are among the devastating headlines. Lacking up-to-date resources and tools to respond to the rush of developments, educators have often been at a loss for how best to navigate these conversations in the classroom, especially around topics that can be charged at every angle.
The most recent event, the latest war between Israel and Hamas, will surely test educators as they try to help their students process their emotions and talk about the complex nature of this conflict. Abby R. Weissโthe chief program officer of Facing History and Ourselves, which provides instructional guidance to educatorsโoffers suggestions for how educators can encourage healthy and helpful discussion in the classroom.
Where should teachers start? By checking in with themselves first, Weiss says. When teachers admit to what they donโt know, the moment can provide an opportunity to share a learning experience with their students.

Physics Girl explores how Weโll Find the Aliens in Our Solar System!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfqpYDVhXd8&t=1s
Looking up at the stars makes you wonder: what and who is out there? And why havenโt we seen any other intelligent civilizations given the vast size and age of the universe? Theyโre complicated questions and although we havenโt met any other space-faring species we do have a way of calculating just how many alien civilizations might be out there as well as some rather frightening ideas as to why we might not have met them.
This video is a bit different from most It's Okay To Be Smart videos. It's part of a new PBS miniseries called STELLAR, done in collaboration with Matt OโDowd from PBS Space Time and Dianna Cowern from Physics Girl. Over six episodes we travel to telescopes, go inside space research centers, and chat with amazing scientists to bring you the most exciting stories about space.
