Beth Lawrence, M.A., CCC-SLP, Visual Critical Thinking as a Way to Learn Nuanced Vocabulary
Beth Lawrence holds a Master of Arts degree in speech-language pathology from Northwestern University. She worked in schools, and had a private practice in the Baltimore area for 17 years. She partnered with Deena Seifert, and together they have over 50 years combined experience working with students of all ages with language, reading and writing disorders. Deena and Beth created two highly visual vocabulary programs, InferCabulary and WordQuations. They authored the Test of Semantic Reasoning, which assesses depth of vocabulary knowledge and critical thinking.
Summary:
The session will include both low and high tech methods for helping students really “get” vocabulary. A five minute TedX Talk introduction shares research and background support for how children make meaning from language. Participants are introduced to InferCabulary online then discuss best practices and strategies.

Shuchi Grover is a senior research scientist at Looking Glass Ventures and a visiting scholar at Stanford University. Her research is focused on teaching and learning of computer science, computational thinking, and programming in schools. She has been working with children and programming since 2001, first in informal afterschool settings, and recently, in classrooms. Her current research encompasses the design of curricula and assessments for all levels of preK-12 CS education, as well as the integration of computing and coding in STEM and other subjects. She has led, and continues to lead, several large research projects (often in collaboration with universities and research organizations) with grants from the US National Science Foundation and other federal agencies. She also consults globally on projects related to K-12 CS, programming, and computational thinking education. She edited and co-authored the recently released "A to Z Handbook on Teaching Introductory Programming" for K-12 teachers.

Complete K12 essentials Youtube channel and Complete K12 Essentials.com was created to offer parents and teachers an online augmentation or alternative when public schools are not available. The need for standard curriculum that can be delivered via the internet became obvious during the pandemic of 2020. Teachers and school districts were left to create lesson plans and somehow connect with the students with very little time. The challenge was to give each child a method to connect with teachers and class mates to simulate a natural learning environment. Although we are still building our library of video lessons, you can use our videos to create lesson plans, review standardized material, introduce building blocks and drills, as well as assigning tests and quizzes on limited videos, such as vocabulary. We are building videos that will serve all students from kindergarten through the 12th grade. Many offerings online lean on animation to capture a child’s attention, which to a certain extent works, but they lose interest rapidly and the opportunities for learning are significantly reduced. Navigating through the material suitable for each grade level is a difficult task at best, so we have created the “SAFE LEARNING PLACE” logo and apply it to all of our videos to show you our dedication to providing good learning material that can be trusted across our whole channel.
