An introduction. Short, animated video that provides an overview. Ideal for learners and teachers. Uses storytelling and real world examples to explain the subject. Narrated by a young learner.
A famous philosopher once said, "Wherever there are numbers, there is beauty" .....
One of the first things we learn as children is how to count.
As time passes, we move onto advanced math topics.
So at any point you could be learning Geometry or Trigonometry or Calculus or Algebra or even a combination of these topics.
In this video I will talk about Algebra, a KEY mathematical topic.
First, let us focus on the word Algebra.
What does it mean? Where does it come from?
The word Algebra has its origins in Baghdad and this was many many years ago.
The word algebra comes from an Arabic book whose title is:
Al Kitab al mukhtasar fi hisab al gabr wal muqabala.
This title is the source of the word: Algebra
So what does the title mean?
The English translation of the title is : The book on calculation by completion and balancing.
Now let us look at a few more definitions:
Algebra is putting real life problems into equations and then solving them.
That does not say much does it? So let us take a simple real world example:
A clown was invited to perform at a birthday party.
The clown arrived in the party with 18 balloons.
On the way to the birthday party 7 balloons got blown away.
So how many balloons did the clown have in the beginning?
Algebra helps us arrive an answer. Let us see how?
Let us denote this unknown number with an alphabet.
You can use any alphabet but a common one is the alphabet 'X'.
Now X gets reduced by 7 since 7 balloons were blown away. Let us write this down:
After this happened the clown was left with 18 balloons.
So X -7 = 18.
What we have here is an equation with 1 unknown number.
Using a bit of mathematical magic , we can now say:
X = 18 + 7
Or
X is equal to 25.
25 IS THE NUMBER OF BALLOONS THE CLOWN HAD IN THE BEGINNING.
Since this example is fresh in our minds, let us look at another definition of Algebra.
Algebra is about finding unknowns. It is the branch of mathematics that substitutes letters for numbers.
Finally, Algebra is the beginning of a journey that gives you the skills to solve more complex problems.
So play with Algebra and you will surely be rewarded.
Thank You.

Today, Craig is going to talk about political parties and their role in American politics. So, when most people think about political parties they associate them with the common ideologies of the voters and representatives within that party, but the goal of a party is NOT to influence policies. The role of political parties is much simpler: to win control of the government. So today, we’re going got talk about why we have political parties in the first place and then finish with the five functions they use in reaching that goal. It’s a lot to cover, so next week we’ll talk about what each political party stands for and how that has changed historically.

The end of the Napoleonic Wars left the great powers of Europe shaken. Judging from the destruction that had been wrought across the continent, it seemed to the powers that be that the Enlightenment had liberated the people, and led to disaster. So, everybody got together in Vienna to have a Congress, and to try to put Europe "right" again. By "right" I mean they wanted to go back to the old days of kings, queens, and nobles running the show. But this new yearning for the past pervaded the continent. Roomanticism arose at the same time, looking back at (imagined) golden age of Medieval Times. Today we'll talk about the Congress of Vienna, The Holy Alliance, and the Romantic movement across the arts.

As the 19th century gave way to the 20th, Black Americans were searching for ways to think about how and where they would fit into a post-slavery society. There were several competing schools of thought. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois were essential to some of the most prominent ideas in this arena.

Lyrics:
These are the things that
Live at the beach
It’s so fun to learn what
Lives at the beach!
These are the things that
Live at the beach!
I love the things at the beach!
I look in the sky and what do I see?
A white seagull flies over me.
Soaring, diving, flap, flap, flap
Flap like the seagull, flap, flap, flap
I look at the sand and what do I see?
A little red crab walks right by me
Crawling, Creeping, click click clack
Crawl like a crab, go click click clack
I look in the tidepool and what do I see?
Clamshells yawn in the deep blue sea
Opening, Closing, snap snap snap
Snap like a clam go snap, snap, snap
I look at the shore and what do I see?
A sea turtle wiggles on the sandy beach
Flippers waving, swish, swish, swish
Wave like a turtle, swish, swish, swish
I look at the beach and what do I see?
Dolphins play in the waves so free
Jumping, diving, splish, splish, splash
Jump like a dolphin, splish, splish, splash
