The main function of the circulatory system is to carry, through the blood, the nutrients to the cells of our body. It is formed by the heart, arteries and veins and its proper functioning is essential for us to have good health. I have a curiosity Do you know how much all the artery and veins would measure together, put in single file? They would measure 97,000 kilometres, which would be equivalent to almost two and a half laps to Earth, it's incredible, right?

The heart has the main role in making sure that the blood travels around the body. With its one hundred thousand pulsations per day it ensures that blood circulates throughout our body allowing it to distribute oxygen and nutrients into our cells.

We are going to start a journey through the circulatory system so we can understand it much better.

The journey of blood begins in the heart. With the pulsations of the heart the blood comes out through one of the great highways of the circulatory system called the Aorta.

From that moment, the blood flows through our body through many veins. It reaches the neck, head and brain through one side. From there, the blood continues to flow into our arms then through the aorta, around the thorax and abdomen and finally reaching both of our legs.

During this trip, the blood is delivering oxygen and nutrients to the cells through the capillary veins.

As this trip is circular, that is to say it has no end, the blood starts the trip back to the heart to regain nutrients and oxygen.

Hello Happy friends! Welcome to a new Happy Learning Video!

Plants, like all living things need to reproduce to perpetuate their species, to survive though time.
They can have a sexual or asexual reproduction. Today, we’re going to get to know plant asexual reproduction.

In asexual plant reproduction, flowers don’t intervene, there’s no need for a gamete or female and male cell. In asexual reproduction, there’s only one parent, so the new plants will be genetically identical to this. New plants can originate from a single cell, a tissue, an organ or a part of a mother plant.

There are two types of asexual reproduction: vegetative reproduction and reproduction without seeds. Let’s get to know them.

Vegetative reproduction is when new plants are formed from a part of a mother plant, generally from the tip of the stem. This type of reproduction is used a lot in agriculture and gardening. There are four types: root vegetables, bulbs, stolons and rhizomes.

Root vegetables, are underground stems which store lots of nutrients, lots of nutritive substances. Examples include potatoes or sweet potatoes. As you can see in the images, a new plant can come from each potato.

Bulbs, are also underground stems but formed by fleshy leaves which store nutrients. Onions, garlics and tulips reproduce through bulbs.

Stolons, are stems which grow horizontally parallel to the floor. When they come into contact with the floor, they form roots and a new plant is born. Strawberries and mint are examples of stolons.

Rhizomes are the same stems as stolons, but underground and new plants are formed from them. Rhizomes grow indefinitely, so they can cover a wide surface. Lots of types of grass, reeds and trees like populus and oaks are examples of rhizomes.

Plant reproduction without seeds is present in mosses and ferns. These plants combine sexual and asexual reproduction. When the female and male gamete meet, structures are formed called spores. These spores, once they are developed and mature, are then impulsed by wind until they fall on the floor and germinate, then new plants are born.

The truth is that nature is wonderful, it’s incredible Did you know, that the oldest ferns are older than the dinosaurs? They have been reproducing on earth for over 420 million years! It’s incredible!

What are you waiting for? Did you now that the fastest bird is the peregrine hawk? This bird of prey can reach up to 400 kilometers per hour whist free falling. Wow it’s so fast, poor dove if it were to cross its path…

On the other hand, the American Woodcock is the slowest bird on the planet, flying at a mere speed of 8 km per hour. Oh, check out
it´s cute little babies!

And did you know that the fastest land bird is the ostrich? This huge bird, actually the largest in the world, cannot fly but can reach up to 70 kilometers per hour…running…it’s faster than a moped!
This tiny hummingbird also holds an impressive record. Besides being the smallest bird, it can also flap its wings 200 times per second or in other words, 12 thousand times in a minute…incredible! They beat so fast that you can hardly even see them, and it looks like they are floating in the air whilst eating…

Did you know that the penguin is the aquatic bird champion? Penguins don’t fly and on land are rather clumsy, but they are incredible in the water. Some species can reach the speed of…36 kilometers per hour. They swim four times faster than a person can…but the most impressive penguin is the emperor penguin. A person can dive to the depth of 260 meters whereas this penguin species dives 535 meters deep and can hold its breath for 5 to 18 minutes. It’s a bird, it has a beak and feathers but it seems as if it wants to be a fish…

Now we have learnt a few records and fascinating facts about birds. The truth is it is beautiful observing them fly in the sky or swim in the sea but as we are always reminding you in Happy Learning, so as to continue enjoying them, we must look after our environment; do not contaminate the air, the sky, the rivers and seas. We must take care of our nature and all that is around us, and like that we will be able to live in a happier world.

What are you waiting for? Hello friends and welcome to a new Happy Learning video. Today we are going to learn about the first stage of our prehistory, today let's look at Paleolithic.
First of all what we must understand is that prehistory is divided into three different periods…the Paleolithic, Neolithic and the Bronze age.
The Paleolithic begins with the appearance of the first human beings and ends 8000 years before Christ.
During the Paleolithic period, people were nomads meaning they didn't live in one place, no, they were constantly on the move in search of animals to hunt. As they were hunters and gatherers, they needed to follow the animals in order to capture them and at the same time they collected wild fruits found on the way.
They lived in tribes, in small groups formed by families, and they found refuge in caves where they would paint on the wall. These paintings were done with a mixture of charcoal, earth, animal fat and water. Look here are a few examples…truth is, its absolutely fascinating to think that these first paintings, these first artistic representations, were drawn thousands of years ago. Don't you think?
Both Paleolithic men and women wore animal skins which they had hunted previously and they used tools such as an ax and spears made out of stones, wood and bones which they themselves carved.
With the passing of time, or rather centuries, these first human beings became more and more intelligent and they began to domesticate animals such as dogs, goats, sheep and pigs; they also began to cultivate plants which was then eaten. It is in these times, with the arrival of agriculture and farming, when everything changed, when man stopped being a nomad and becomes sedentary and the fist villages are made…This is when the Paleolithic period ends and the Neolithic begins but that is a different stage in prehistory which we will learn about in another video.
Did you find this voyage into the past interesting?
Well I do…so goodbye friends and don't forget to subscribe to Happy Learning.

Hello Happy Friends! Welcome to a New Happy Learning Video. Today, we’re going to get to know unicellular and multicellular living organisms.

We all know, that all living things are made up of cells, but many of them are form of a single cell. They are called micro or unicellular organisms. Although they are very simple organisms, they live an independent life, meaning they perform all vital functions by themselves. Do you remember what these functions are? Well done! Nutrition, Relationship, and reproduction.

Some Examples of unicellular beings are bacteria and protozoans.

Some of these organisms are able to make their own food but most of them feed on other living beings.

They are so small they can only bee seen through a microscope, that’s why we also call them microbes or microorganisms. The truth is that they are a little bad for us humans because they cause diseases, but others are very beneficial, like ones which turn milk into yogurt o cheese. Hmmmm so yummy!

Living things who made up of more than one cell, are called multicellular beings. Like plants, or animals. All cells in these organisms are alive. They feed on substances they take to the membrane and they reproduce, by increasing in size and dividing into two. Also, lots of them can move.

Cells are very diverse and they join in biological tissues depending on their shape and function. Two examples of biological tissues are the epithelial tissue, our skin, and muscular tissues, our muscles. These organs, likewise, form groups like the respiratory or digestive system.

Well friends, now you know about unicellular and multicellular beings. Easy Peasy!

Fun facts about animals

The secret behind a cat’s tongue

Cats are very special mammal animals, and until not long ago, they had a secret in their tongue which we have finally discovered. They are very sleepy animals, they sleep 14 hours a day, but they are also very clean, since when they are awake they dedicate a long time to cleaning their bodies with their own tongues.

But we couldn’t understand how they could clean themselves perfectly by just licking. Some researchers have found out that cats tongues are covered in many tiny thorns called buds. These thorns have a hollow cavity, which cats use to fill with saliva and use it, as if it was a sponge with water and soap, to clean all of their bodies. That is, by licking themselves! Cats are very clean, and beautiful!

What are you waiting for? Hello friends, I am the Earth, your planet and I want to talk to you about the ground, which is really important and yet we rarely take it into consideration.

The ground which you walk on everyday is my most superficial part, it´s where your houses are built on, your schools and also the roads on which you travel. It´s where rivers run along, plants grow on and animals live on.

How do you think the ground was made? Well it was a very long process, taking millions of years, and is still continuing, in which some really strong workers who never get tired are involved: the sun, the wind, the water and living things. Rocks which at the beginning made up my surface, bit by bit began to crack breaking into smaller pieces because of the strength of those workers. This mixture of different minerals grew richer with organic matter coming from plants and dead animals. It takes a hundred years to obtain just one centimeter of soil. The result of all this process gives us a surface where life can live, full of wonderful creatures.
We must look after our ground just as we are maintaining our air clean as well as our water because it´s imperative for living things for them to be able to eat as well as to have a place to live. And there are so many dangers which, in a very short time, can transform fertile land into a desert where it is impossible for life to thrive.

Forest fires as well as cutting down large amounts of trees are examples of how the soil is left defenseless. Without the help of the roots from trees and plants in the ground, rain water and wind wipe away the nutrients in the soil. This is called erosion. And when this occurs, nothing will be able to grow there again. The same thing happens when toxic products are thrown on the ground killing living things and contaminating the water that flows underground making the land sterile.

Without healthy soil it is impossible to have a healthy life, so we must look after it all together. The ground you walk on is the ground which allows you to live. It is for this reason that we must help maintain it clean and respecting it by never throwing rubbish on it.

If we keep it clean, I the Earth, your house in the universe and all living things which live on me, will all be a lot happier.

Because as you know…children can make a world of difference.

Hello friends! Welcome to a new Happy Learning video.
Today, we’re going to learn about the human musculoskeletal system, It’s what lets us move around!
The musculoskeletal system, is made up of two systems, the muscular system, and the skeletal system.
The muscular system is the active part of the musculoskeletal system. Muscles are between our bones and skin and they are joined to the bones through tendons. They are elastic organs that can be lengthened, or shortened, causing some body part movement. Us humans, have approximately 630 muscles.
According to the movements that they make, we can differentiate, voluntary and involuntary muscles. Voluntary muscles move only when we want them to and the involuntary muscles are those that move without us realising, like our heart or stomach, that are always in movement.
The skeletal system is made up of all bones and cartilage. The Skeleton gives us our shape, that differentiates us from other living things and allows us to walk, run or jump. Our body has 206 bones and each one of them has their own name. Some of them are, skull, that protects our brain, the spine, that maintains us stable and upright, the jaw, allows us to move our mouths to chew food, Ribs, that protect our heart or lungs and femur, the longest bone in the human body and is found in our legs.
Bones are joined with each other by joints.
They are divided into three groups, depending on their level of mobility:
Immobile or fixed joints, don’t have any mobility, like the ones that join the skull.
Semi-mobile joints, that do have some mobility, but not a lot, like vertebrae (vertebri) in our backs.
Mobile joints, that have great mobility, like our elbow or knee.
Now we’ve got to know a little more about our musculoskeletal system. Now, we need to do plenty of physical exercise to make it work brilliantly and maintain ourselves really healthy.

What are you waiting for? Did you know that a baby had more bones in its body than an adult?

An adult has 206 bones in their body whereas a newly born baby has almost 300. This is because newborn babies are born with some of their bones separated to make it easier for them at childbirth. If we were to touch a baby’s head very carefully, we would feel some softer parts called fontanel, where they are joined by cartilaginous tissues and with the passing of time these bones and tissues become the skull. The truth is, nature is very wise, don’t you think?

And did you know that the breath of newly born babies does not smell?

This is because they don’t have any teeth which is where the bacteria responsible for bad breath called halitosis, is found. So, as you are not a baby, you must clean your teeth very well after each meal so as not to have bad breath. Don’t forget, ok?

Did you know that most babies cry without tears?

The reason for this is a simple one. The tear duct in a baby’s eyes is not totally open at birth and so tears can’t pass through. In some cases these ducts don’t open until the baby turns four months old. Though this happens, we cannot think that when a baby is crying, it’s only pretending. During the first months of a baby´s life, crying is the most practical way of communicating, so when a baby cries, we must go to them or notify an adult so that they can find out what the baby wants. We must take great care of newborn babies, because don’t forget, we were all babies once.
