How to integrate Social Studies and English Language Arts
Welcome to the Arizona Department of Education’s video on integrating social studies and ELA. In 2018 the Arizona State Board of Education adopted new social studies standards and gave time recommendations for elementary classrooms. With the push for extended ELA and math time this leaves little extra time for social studies. This video will show ways in which you can integrate social studies with ELA to maximize student learning and meet the time recommendations.

Online public school combines the best of all worlds by allowing students to do school at home, through K12, Inc. Unlike homeschool though they actually have teachers assigned to them. This is an invaluable resource for parents and students. This allows me to confidently assist our kids knowing that we have help whenever we need it. We love having them home and also knowing they are getting highly competitive instruction.
Both of our kids have done school this way through K12 since they were in kindergarten. Given our family situation with living life after traumatic brain injury, it has been so helpful to have flexibility in schooling. This allows us to accommodate our many doctors appointments while not missing any school. We love our online school routines.

Discover what the four types of sentences are with Oliver, Chloe, Bella, and Elvis, as they take you around the petting zoo. The declarative Oliver never stops making simple statements and doling out information, while the interrogative Chloe has a never-ending list of questions. The imperative Bella can’t stop commanding or requesting, and the Exclamatory Elvis is a hoot with his excited utterances. With loads of examples briskly hopping in from every nook and cranny of the petting zoo in this video, identifying the types of sentences or differentiating between them will no longer be a Herculean task for kids. Learn to use appropriate punctuation marks: a period for declarative sentences, a question mark for interrogative sentences, and an exclamation point for exclamatory sentences. Get on board right away, ‘coz there’s so much to do at the petting zoo!

B. Activity
Students will be divided into two groups. Group 1 will be the boys and Group 2 will be the girls. Each group will guess and descried the picture that the teacher will show. Every correct description is good for points. The more pictures they guess the more pints they gain.
C. Analysis
The students will stay in their groups. The teacher will ask comprehensive questions based on the answers in the activity earlier.
D. Abstraction
Passive and Active Voice
Passive and Active voice are called 2 special forms of verbs.
The Active voice is called “Normal Voice”
The Passive voice is called “Less Usual”
Voice is the quality of a verb that shows whether the subject is the doer or the receiver of the action.
Active Voice – is used to indicate that the subject of the sentence is the doer of the action.
Examples:
Mom read the novel in one day.
Tom painted the entire house.
Passive Voice – is used to indicate that the subject in the sentence is the receiver instead of being the doer of the action.
Examples:
The house was remodeled by the homeowner.
The report has been sent by me.
Changing Active voice to Passive voice
Active Voice : The guest enjoyed the party.
Passive Voice: The Party was enjoyed by the guest.
Active Voice : They are painting the walls.
Passive Voice: The walls are being painted by them.
E. Application
In a ½ sheet of paper, change the Active voice into Passive voice.
1. I have lost the key.
2. The choir really enjoys the piece.
3. The science class viewed the comet.
4. The director will give you the instructions.
5. The kangaroos carried her baby in her pouch.
Valuing
What is the significance in studying Active Voice and Passive Voice?
V. Evaluation
Direction: On a ½ sheet of paper copy the sentences and identify if it’s Active Voice or Passive Voice.
1. Most of the class is reading the books.
2. The car has been fixed by the mechanic.
3. The money was counted by the cashier.
4. The dog chased ball.
5. The police have arrested the thieves.
VII. Assignment
Direction: Differentiate Active Voice from Passive Voice in 2 sentences only. Give 3 examples for each voice.
