Academic vocabulary is a key part of the CCRS English Language Arts shift of complexity. But beyond the CCRS, academic language in general and academic vocabulary specifically have broad implications for our studentsโ lives. Academic vocabulary isnโt just for higher education; itโs another tool for our students to learn and use in order to understand texts; oral & written directions; communicate precise ideas when speaking or writing; comprehend language of assessments in the classroom and the workplace; describe thinking and problem-solving; participate more fully in social, community, academic, and work-related settings; and develop greater fluency in English. Join me to explore what academic vocabulary is, where to find tools to identify it and how to decide which words to teach and how to teach them, whether through conversationโat lower levelsโor more explicitly at intermediate and higher levels. Leave with concrete ideas for teaching and tools that will save you time!

Educational video for kids to learn about light's main properties: reflection and refraction. Reflection is a property that makes it possible to see objects that do not emit light. It occurs when light rays called incident rays collide with an object and later when these rays bounce in another direction, they are called reflected rays. There are two types of reflection: specular and diffuse reflection. Refraction occurs when light rays pass from one medium to another, for example from air to water, causing them to change their speed and direction. The light rays that reach an object are called incident rays and the light rays that change their trajectory or velocity are called refracted rays. Refraction is also a property that allows white light to be broken down into different colors.
This is a very useful and interesting video resource for young children to learn about the properties of light. It is an excellent video for primary education.

Algebra II on Khan Academy: Your studies in algebra 1 have built a solid foundation from which you can explore linear equations, inequalities, and functions. In algebra 2 we build upon that foundation and not only extend our knowledge of algebra 1, but slowly become capable of tackling the BIG questions of the universe. We'll again touch on systems of equations, inequalities, and functions...but we'll also address exponential and logarithmic functions, logarithms, imaginary and complex numbers, conic sections, and matrices. Don't let these big words intimidate you. We're on this journey with you!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

Lesson 42. Triangles, Circles and Hexagons | Kindergarten | Math For Kids
TeCa creates online math courses for kids by grade level from K-5. All our math lessons are delivered through attractive videos, in which we extensively use visual images, graphics, animation and upbeat music to make kids excited about each and every lesson. We also have practice exercises for kids in each lesson to reinforce their understanding.
Our goal is to bring kids enjoyment in math learning, help them see the beauty of mathematics, and have a love for math from an early age. We believe teaching kids math in the right way gives them a head start in the subject, which is a strong foundation the development in other areas of education.

Geometry on Khan Academy: We are surrounded by space. And that space contains lots of things. And these things have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with the nature of these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world at large--from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). Learning geometry is about more than just taking your medicine ("It's good for you!"), it's at the core of everything that exists--including you. Having said all that, some of the specific topics we'll cover include angles, intersecting lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, analytic geometry, and geometric constructions. Wow. That's a lot. To summarize: it's difficult to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry.
