What is an idiom? These statements can often be a little confusing because they don't seem to make sense! In Idioms for Kids, your kids and students will learn what idioms are and how fun they can be to use. Idioms are considered a tool in figurative language to make something more interesting. Sometimes they use comparisons between very different things—like fish and visitors—to paint a picture for the hearer. Other times, they don't seem to make any sense at all. "When pigs fly" means that whatever you're describing will never happen, because pigs will never be able to fly. And to say "Break a leg!" means to wish someone good luck. Surely, breaking your leg is not good luck! As your kids will find out, idioms can often be rather strange.
This video also points out that idioms from one country may not make sense to people from another country. The phrases we use in America might not translate well for people who live in Australia or England, even though English is the common language among the three countries. Idioms make sense to the people that live in the country from which the phrase comes.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about idioms! If you want some more examples, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about idioms that is full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Did you know that there are three main parts (or branches) of the U.S. government? It's true! The three branches are the executive, legislative, and judicial. In this Three Branches of Government video for kids, you will learn about the people who work in each branch and how they balance each other out. In fact, one reason we have three branches is in part to ensure there are checks and balances and that no one branch has too much power or control.
The executive branch is the one that the president belongs to. The vice president and the cabinet (a group of people who advise the president) are also part of this branch. The president specifically is the country's leader and can approve or veto laws passed by the legislative branch. The vice president is the second highest executive office in the government. However, this person is also the president or head of the Senate.
Speaking of the Senate, it is one of the houses of Congress. The other is the House of Representatives. These two houses of Congress are responsible for writing, discussing, and voting on laws. The Senate approves the president's appointments to the cabinet, meaning that they have a say in who the president picks for certain jobs. The House of Representatives can override the president's vetoes if they have a large enough majority.
Finally, the judicial branch is where you would find the Supreme Court, a group of nine individuals (eight justices and one chief justice) who oversee the U.S. court system. These individuals have no term limits and can serve as a Supreme Court judge for life. The Supreme Court decides whether something is constitutional or unconstitutional. It also decides which court cases to review and sometimes determine new ways to interpret the law.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about the three branches of the U.S. government! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about the United States, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

What do you know about the country of China? In All about China for Kids, you will learn a lot of cool facts about this incredible country. For instance, it is the most populated country in the whole world at 1.4 BILLION people! That is four times as many people as live in the USA. In addition, the official name of the country is the People's Republic of China. It is also the fourth largest country and borders a lot of other countries.
Because of China's big size, it boasts lots of different landscapes, like deserts, forests, mountains, and plateaus. In fact, a whole third of the country is covered in mountains. There are thousands of rivers, including the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, throughout the country. And there is also a lot of wildlife all over the various regions, such as the Giant Panda, which is actually an endangered species. There are only around 2,000 pandas alive today!
China is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations. The history of China splits into periods of time called dynasties, the first one being the Xia Dynasty (pronounced like shaw) over 4000 years ago. And during the Qin Dynasty, the Great Wall of China was built, and the people developed advanced technology in mathematics and infrastructure. The last emperor was overthrown in 1912, and the country became a republic. But then in 1949, the current communist government overthrew the republic following a civil war.
There are so many cool attractions and landmarks to visit in China. Besides the Great Wall of China, there is the site of the terracotta army, a series of statues that represent Chinese warriors. They were buried under ground for more than 2,000 years! The Forbidden City is another great attraction, a place that was home to 24 of China's emperors. It was built around 1420 AD. Can you guess why it's called the forbidden city?
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about the amazing country of China! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Pilgrims for Kids will give you a brief history of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving.
It all happened about 400 years ago. There was a group of travelers who came to America in search of religious freedom. They wanted to worship God in their own way in England, but they were not permitted. Instead, they boarded ships and went on a journey. These people are referred to as the Pilgrims.
The Pilgrims left Europe for America on September 20, 1620, and
established a colony called Plymouth. A colony is an area set up by a group of people who have usually traveled from the same country. It is a place where they settle to live, work, and raise their families.
Although the Pilgrims were happy to have settled in America, they faced a difficult and cold winter. They were not prepared. They built a large house and some smaller homes, but for a period of time people still slept on the Mayflower. Many of the Pilgrims died during the winter and of the 102 people who came across the Atlantic Ocean only 47 were still alive.
There were Native Americans living in the same area as the Pilgrims. Native Americans are the people who were already living on the land before the Pilgrims arrived in what is now known as America. They established a peace treaty with the Pilgrims. The Native Americans also agreed to trade for animal furs.
Some of the Native Americans also chose to stay with the Pilgrims and taught them how to plant corn, hunt, fish, and how to survive the cold winter.
After the first harvest in 1621, the Pilgrims invited some of the Native Americans to join them for a feast. Sometimes this is referred to as the first Thanksgiving as the tradition continued after every harvest in the years that followed.
