Freshwater ecosystems
There are several different types of freshwater ecosystems.
Freshwater has a low salinity. In this video is cover streams and rivers, along with lakes and ponds.
In addition, I cover wetlands. There are two major types, swamps, and marshes. A marsh is a wetland without trees and a swamp has trees growing in the water.
There is no standard definition about the size of a pond or a lake, however, the water in lakes and ponds have low salinity.

Walking water is a fun experiment in which paper towels transfer water from one cup to another. When you use different color water it makes the demonstration interesting.
In science experiments, you have three main variables. The independent, dependent, and control or constant variables.
The walking water experiment will help you learn about these variables.

Hurricanes also called tropical cyclones are amazing, powerful storms that can bring destruction and misery to an area hit by the hurricane. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 1.2 million Americans live in coastal areas at risk of “substantial damage” from hurricanes
In this video I will look at the causes these tremendous storms?
In the northern hemisphere most hurricanes will begin to form around the equator off the coast of west africa.
The official hurricane season is between June 1 and November 3o
Why do hurricanes occur during this time period.?
The reason is that hurricanes need the ocean surface temperature to be at least 79-degree Fahrenheit.
In addition, you need high pressure above the hurricane and low wind shear.
Between June and November both of these conditions are meet often
Hurricanes are like giant engines that use warm, moist air as fuel. That is why they form over warm ocean waters near the equator. The warm, moist air over the ocean rises upward from near the surface. As the warm air rises a low-pressure system is created.
Air from surrounding areas with higher air pressure pushes into the low-pressure area. Then that "new" air becomes warm and moist and rises, too. As the warmed, moist air rises and cools off, the water in the air forms clouds. The whole system of clouds and wind spins and grows, fed by the ocean's heat and water evaporating from the surface
Tradewinds which blow across the equator help push the storm along.
The hurricane will rotate in an in a counterclockwise fashion in the north due to the Coriolis effect.
The Coriolis effect is caused by the earth's rotation and curves air in the northern hemisphere to the right.
The hurricane will continue to move across the ocean and pick up strength if the water temperature remains above 79 degrees, high pressure remains above the storm, and there is moisture to fuel the storm.
Hurricane strength is measured by wind speed and barometric pressure.
The minimum wind speed to be classified as a hurricane is 74 degrees and category 5 hurricanes have a wind speed greater than 157 miles per hour.
As a general guideline, September is the peak month for hurricanes because of the warm surface temperatures during this month.

How do ecosystems change over time?
Ecological succession, also called Biological succession occurs when one ecological community changes into another.
There are two main types of ecological succession.
Primary and Secondary Succession.
Primary Succession occurs when there is no soil and the new community has to start without any soil.
Secondary succession occurs when an event destroys an area but the soil remains.
The pioneer species are the first plants to appear in the new ecosystem.

The Equinox is the date in which the day and night are equal. The Solstice is the longest day of the year? Because the Earth is tilted at a 23.5 degrees angle and also rotates and revolves around the earth the length of the day varies though out the year
During each equinox, both hemispheres receive almost equal amounts of sunlight
12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of nighttime.
Questions answered in this video?
What are the dates of the vernal equinox and the autumn equinox?
What are the dates of the summer solstice and the winter solstice?
What is the equilux?
When is the shortest day of the year?
When is the longest day of the year?

What happens during metaphase?
In this video, I would like to talk about the stage of mitosis called metaphase.
Mitosis consists of four stages and I always remember mitosis using PMAT
For Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
During metaphase the sister chromatids align in the middle of the cell.

However for this to happen a couple of things need to happen during prophase
During prophase the chromatin condenses into x shaped chromosomes.
Each half of the x is a sister chromatid and identical copies of the DNA
The two sides of the x shaped chromosome are attached at the centromere.

During metaphase spindle fibers appear These fibers create something called the spindle apparatus.
It consists of spindle fibers, centrioles, and another fiber called aster fibers
In plants, the centrioles are missing.
These spindle apparatus move to the poles of the cell.
The spindle fibers attach to the centromeres of the sister chromatids at the kinetochore.
After the spindle fiber is attached at the kinetochore the sister chromatid is pulled along the spindle apparatus and eventually end up in the middle of the cell.

Metaphase is the shortest stage of mitosis but is important because it helps ensure that new cells have correct copies of the chromosomes.

Let’s take a look at the difference between specular reflection and diffuse reflection.
Specular reflection reflects all light that arrives from a given direction at the same angle, whereas diffuse reflection reflects light in many different directions.
I also review the law of reflection and the difference between the incident ray and reflective ray.

A keystone species has a large impact on their habitat given their size and numbers. Their daily activities impact all kinds of other species.
A keystone is a central stone at the summit of an arch, locking the whole together.
A keystone species helps keep the entire ecosystem together
When beavers build their dam and lodge they basically create their own wetlands which impact many other organisms.
In addition, as the number of beavers increase the biodiversity of the ecosystem increases, and also the inverse fewer beavers less biodiversity
You may have heard the expression “ Busy as a beaver?”
That is because they, well stay busy building stuff.
Beavers build dams and a lodge to live in.
The dam transforms a stream or creek into a wetland.

What makes an arachnids an arachnid? Spiders and mites are examples of arachnids. First arachnids are arthropods and in addition, they have 8 legs, no antennae, and no wings.
Spiders are arachnids and come in a variety of sizes and shapes.
Spiders are not insects, but instead, they are Arachnids.
Although a spider and insect have many of the same traits spiders have only two body segments and eight legs instead of six.

An introduction to heating and cooling curve. In this video, I introduce heating and cooling curves and show the location of phase changes.

" A typical heating curve for a substance depicts changes in temperature that result as the substance absorbs increasing amounts of heat. Plateaus in the curve (regions of constant temperature) are exhibited when the substance undergoes phase transitions."

Learn how to find the slope from a graph. The slope can also be called the gradient of the line. The slope is a measure of the rate of change of a line or the steepness of a line. The slope is represented by the letter m
Using a graph you can calculate the slope by using rise over run. The rise will be how the line changes vertically and the run is the change in the x-axis or horizontal change.

The earth has an abundance of water, and even appears blue from space. However, only a small percentage of the water on Earth is freshwater and much of this freshwater is either frozen or unattainable.n other words, freshwater only makes up roughly 3% of all of the water on Earth You will find the bulk of freshwater in these 4 main sources.

Surface waters ( Lakes, Rivers, Streams, Ponds, Swamps, marshes)

Glaciers and IceCaps

Groundwater ( Shallow and Deep)

Atmosphere
