Astronomers have just spotted something the universe has never shown us before — a triple black hole smash-up. Imagine three cosmic giants, each powerful enough to swallow stars, colliding in a single, mind-bending event. In this video, we’ll break down how scientists detected it, what happens when black holes merge, and why this discovery could rewrite what we know about the universe. Stick around — this is space at its wildest, and it’s happening right now.

I recently got to visit the anti-matter factory at CERN. This is the only place in the world where they've managed to make antihydrogen. This is antihydrogen. It's an atom of antimatter made of an anti electron, also known as a positron and an antiproton in the middle. This is arguably the most expensive material in the world, costing an estimated thousand trillion dollars per gram.
They have to be incredibly careful with this antimatter, because it's a kind of opposite matter to what our world's made from. So if the antimatter touches literally anything, it will annihilate, immediately turning all of its mass into pure energy. Fortunately, antihydrogen is slightly magnetic, so the scientists at CERN can stop it from touching anything by hovering it in a magnetic field called a penning trap.
After the Big Bang, half of the universe was made of anti-matter and the other half normal matter. According to many of our best theories of cosmology. But today we don't see any antimatter in the universe and is a mystery where it went. So making anti-matter in the lab means we can study its properties, which might give us some clues about what happened to half a universe’s worth of anti-matter.
This experiment I visited tested which direction antihydrogen would fall in gravity. Would it fall down like matter? Or because it's anti-matter? Would it fall up? Turns out it did fall down slightly. Disappointing, because now I can't invent hoverboards. But it's really cool for me to actually see the actual experiment from when all of that news came out. So it's pretty cool to be in an anti-matter factory.

A simple and clear explanation of all the important features of quantum physics that you need to know. Check out this video's sponsor https://brilliant.org/dos
I have spent a lot of time thinking about how best to explain quantum physics and this is the result of all my hours of pondering, and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I decided to just explain it as it actually is, rather than rely on analogies. The video explains the quantum wavefunction, particle-wave duality, the measurement problem, the double-slit experiment, superposition, entanglement, quantum tunnelling, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, and energy quantisation. Let me know if it was helpful! Cheers Dx

In this map of fungi we learn everything we can about fungi in about 20 minutes. They are hugely underappreciated as they are an entire kingdom of life, as rich as plants and animals, and we use them so much in our day to day lives beyond eating their mushrooms. They are really important for medicine (antibiotics, statins and many more) and nearly all plants on Earth rely on fungi to live. Amazing stuff. I learned so much making this video!

Everyone is talking about the black hole image, which is amazing! But I've been wondering where actually is the black hole? So here it is. It is inbetween the virgo and leo constellations. Although you can't see it (unless you have a planet sized radio telescope array), it is still nice to know where it is.

What do cosmologists mean when they say Big Bang? Perhaps not what we think. The Big Bang poster is available here: https://store.dftba.com/produc....ts/the-big-bang-post

There are many descriptions of the big bang out there that are wrong. Anything that says the universe exploded from an infinitely small, dense and hot point, known as a big bang singularity, are out of date, but I’ve seen this description in many places on the internet and diagrams. I’ve even been guilty of saying this too! But I’ve recently updated my understanding, so here is what cosmologists actually mean when they say big bang.

Special thanks to Katie Mack for some cosmology help: https://twitter.com/AstroKatie

I sometimes read things about quantum computing that are not quite right, I clear some up here. Check out this video's sponsor https://brilliant.org/dos

Quantum computing is a hot topic these days, but I sometimes see things in the media that I know are probably going to be misinterpreted by the people reading them. So this is my attempt to clear up some of the main misconceptions I see about quantum computing.

But if you are wondering what the state of quantum computing is right now. It is real and exists. The quantum computers of today have a few tens of qubits: as of making this video the highest number of qubits in the universal quantum computing scheme is 72 from Google, and in the quantum annealing scheme is about 2000 from D-Wave. But they work and solve real world problems. They haven’t quite exceeded classical computers, but they are very close, and there are going to be some interesting developments over the next year.

I explain why it is called a square root, and also how a square root works.

#mathematics #DoS

Clarifications:
To keep this video simple I decided to not talk about complex numbers. But perhaps I should have mentioned complex numbers when talking about the square root of negative numbers.

When I said "you can never have a square root of a negative number", I guess I could have said "you can never have a square root of a negative number, unless you use complex numbers."

Cool, well I'm still learning! And thanks for keeping me in check. :D

I look at the galaxies that are moving away from us faster than light because of expanding space. Check out this video's sponsor https://brilliant.org/dos

Ninety seven percent of the galaxies in the observable universe are moving away from us faster than the speed of light. You might wonder how this can be true when one of the unbreakable laws of the universe is that nothing can travel faster than light. But this only applies to things moving through space and these distant galaxies are getting further away from us because the space between us is expanding. So the distance between us and them is increasing faster than light could travel across that space. This is also why the observable Universe is 45 billion light years across despite only being 13.8 billion years old.

This follows my journey to find and rank all of the biggest threats to humanity. Grab yourself the Map of Doom poster here: https://store.dftba.com/collec....tions/domain-of-scie

Link to Veritasium’s Asteroids video video: https://youtu.be/4Wrc4fHSCpw

This year was the first experience we’ve had of a global disaster affecting every single person on Earth. And also how unprepared society was to deal with it, despite plenty of people giving warnings that this was going to happen at some stage.

But in the midst of all the doom I started to wonder, what other things could threaten humanity, that we are not thinking about? So I made the Map of Doom to list all the threats to humanity in one place.

But just finding them all is not enough. I wanted to find a way of comparing the risks of all of these disaster scenarios. So this video follows my attempt at doing that, and I think I’ve hit on a great way to visually compare all these dangers, which I haven’t seen anyone do before, so hopefully by the end of the video you’ll have a better idea about what the biggest threats are, and how they compare to this pandemic.

Find out what it takes for a quantum computer to beat a classical computer to achieve quantum supremacy. Check out this video's sponsor https://brilliant.org/dos

Quantum supremacy’s that moment when a quantum computer beats the best supercomputers at solving some kind of problem, and it’s a very exciting time right now in quantum computing because, as of recording this video we’re on the brink of having quantum supremacy. In this video I quickly describe how quantum computing works, what quantum computers exist in the world today and what you need to do to prove quantum supremacy.

When I posted this video quantum supremacy hadn’t been reached, but people are predicting that it will happen soon.
Also the qubit numbers I posted for the different quantum computing efforts will go out of date quite quickly, so they won’t be valid if you are watching this in the future. Hello from April 2018!
And full disclosure - I used to work at D-Wave but I don’t have any favourites, I’m excited by progress on all fronts and believe they all deserve the same critical analysis.

An introduction to the Interpretations of Quantum Mechanics. The first 500 people to sign up via my link will get two FREE months of Skillshare Premium: https://skl.sh/domainofscience
The interpretations of quantum physics are a collection of attempts of many physicists to try and make quantum physics make sense. The measurement problem and entanglement are notions that are confusing to us humans and people puzzle over questions like: Is the wave function real or just mathematics? What does a subatomic particle really look like? What is particle-wave duality really? That is where the interpretations of quantum physics come in. This is my attempt to cover the main ones.

It might look like I'm using my Jedi powers to control a droid, but in reality, I'm at CERN in Switzerland and I'm in their robotics lab. This is where they build the robots to help them with their high energy experiments. This is a mock up of the beamline, and this is used to test out their robots. The beam line is where they fire high energy particles at each other underground.
And this isn't a safe environment for humans because of radiation. So instead we can send in robots, which we can control remotely, which was what I was doing here. This robot's got wheels, which lets it move in every direction, even sideways, like a crab. So these can be controlled with a keyboard or with a gamepad, or even through this augmented reality display.
This robot has a spinning lidar scanner that builds a 3D model of the room it's in, and it can fit through small holes. And this one runs on a rail and can reach all around the beam line. It's got a radiation detector which monitors radiation levels after the beam is turned off, to see when it's safe for humans to come back into the tunnels.

This is how to get your head around Feynman Diagrams. Get your free trial of MegellanTV here https://try.magellantv.com/domainofscience

A Feynman diagram is a picture of what happens when particles interact with each other. I in this video I explain what you need to know to understand Feynman diagrams, show you what all the particles in the standard model are, as well as which lines we use to represent them. And the general rules the fundamental particles follow as well as which particles take part in interactions via the fundamental forces.

Fundamentally everything is made of particles and these particles are are described by a quantum wavefunction. But what actually is it, and is it even real? Support this channel: https://www.patreon.com/domainofscience and https://store.dftba.com/collec....tions/domain-of-scie

Here I explain what they are and show a visualization of what they look like, and show how they are similar to many other waves we are familiar with.
Overall the wavefunction is a mathematical tool which keeps track of all of the properties of a quantum particle, and explains our observations of the probabilistic nature of where particles appear when we do experiments on them. From the wavefunction we can calculate all of the observables like position, momentum, energy or spin, by applying mathematical operators on it. So in quantum physics, the wavefunction encodes all of the information about the quantum system, and valid wavefunctions are solutions to the Schrodinger equation which I covered in my last video which you can watch here https://youtu.be/AR23uxZruhE

Biology is the subject that studies life in all its forms, from the simple cell through to all the animals that inhabit the planet. In this map I lay out the subject of biology and how all of the sub-disciplines are related to each other: microbiology, genetics, bioengineering, anatomy, physiology, medicine, neuroscience, ecology, zoology to name but a few.

Biology spans the scales, from biophysics and biochemistry studying the basic elements of life, to the study of whole ecosystems and the environment. If there is one word that describes biology, it is complexity. There is a huge amount we still don’t understand about how life works, how it started and how it ended up with us.

Not only is this the first time a commercial company is sending people into space, it is also the first crewed mission to the International Space Station to be launched from American soil in 9 years since the Space Shuttle was decommissioned. On the 27th of May SpaceX will make spaceflight history by being the first commercial company to transport humans to the ISS on a Falcon9 rocket in the SpaceX Dragon Crew spacecraft. This is the beginning of commercial spaceflight and potentially the beginning of space tourism.
